Influences of adding heptanol and pentanol on the solubility of ethanol/hydrous ethanol/diesel/biodiesel/Jet A-1 fuel ternary blends

This study uses heptanol and pentanol as cosolvents at various temperatures of 10 ºC, 20 ºC, and 30 ºC to increase the mixture instability of ethanol/hydrous ethanol combined with diesel fuel, waste cooking oil (WCO) biodiesel, and Jet A-1 fuel. First, using heptanol and pentanol as cosolvents at various temperatures, pure ethanol is blended with diesel oil, Jet A-1, and WCO biodiesel separately in the experiment. Second, applying heptanol and pentanol as cosolvents at various temperatures while combining hydrous ethanol (E10, 90% ethanol + 10% water) separately with diesel oil, Jet A-1, and WCO biodiesel. The base fuels are blended with pure methanol or hydrous ethanol at various mixing proportions ranging from 0 to 100 vol% with 10 vol% increments. Using a high-precision pipette and continuous shaking, the cosolvent, namely heptanol and pentanol (titrant), is added gradually and individually into the tube until the phase borders of the ternary mixes become apparent. The results show that phase separation occurs even when the blend temperature is raised to 60 ºC in pure ethanol-diesel combinations. The pure ethanol/biodiesel mixture demonstrates total solubility without an additive. The outcomes also show how the ambient temperature significantly impacts the blend's stability and cosolvent content. By increasing the phase stability problem of ethanol and hydrous ethanol with the base fuels, heptanol and pentanol demonstrated exemplary performance. It can be inferred that the least amount of cosolvent is detected for biodiesel-hydrous ethanol and Jet A-1-hydrous ethanol, respectively.
