摘要

Abstract: Increased ecological consciousness and the knowledge of limited reserves of primary energy in the form of fossil fuels make it necessary to utilise available energy sources economically. Cogeneration plants with gas engines produce electricity and heat at decentralized locations, where they are required. They offer optimum efficiency in the utilisation of energy with minimum environmental burden. The high efficiency of cogeneration systems means not only low energy costs and therefore high feasibility, it also means energy savings and low emissions to atmosphere. Gas engines are presently powered primarily with natural gas, biogas or landfill gas. The use of hydrogen as a CO2 free fuel is a new application for gas engines, but as well the utilization of process gases with hydrogen mixtures like siderurgical gases has shown huge potential. Gases like coke gas, blast furnace gas or converter gas with low calorific values or changing gas compositions with respect to emission limits of the common air quality requirements is a new challenge for gas engine development. Blending such process gases with e.g. green hydrogen enables the utilization of gases beyond the current limits. Gas engines show a high flexibility regarding the utilization of metallurgical off gases. Meanwhile INNIO Jenbacher gas engines have more than 2 milllion cumulated operating hours with existing applications like COG, BFG, LDG or Furnace off gases from the Ferro-alloy industry. The modular approach with multiple units per power plant offers high flexibility regarding plant operation and future growth as well as safe and reliable operation based on the redundancy solution. The power plant can be operated in a wide range in an optimized efficiency band. This flexibility allows the economical utilization even of relatively small volumes of metallurgical gases which avoids flaring and can substitute other fossil fuels. The high efficiency save resources and of course it has an indirect CO2 reduction impact too. This paper shows existing applications of different hydrogen containing gases but as well future opportunities with the increased yield by blending challenging mixtures with renewable hydrogen.
