摘要

The utilization of alternative fuels in internal combustion engines has gained significant attention due to environmental and energy security concerns. One promising approach is the integration of ammonia into the operation of heavy-duty compression ignition engines, in a dual-fuel configuration with diesel. Ammonia as a fuel, highlighting its low carbon content and potential for zero CO2 emissions. This experimental study is mainly focus on the performance, combustion characteristics, and emissions of an ammonia-diesel dual-fuel heavy-duty engine. The engine performance and emissions are discussed under the cases of various ammonia energy ratio and the different pilot injection timing, pressure and duration. Results shows that ammonia-diesel dual fuel combustion can reduce greenhouse gas significantly. However, the challenges associated with ammonia combustion, such as its high ignition delay, low energy density, as well as its low laminar flame speed which causes longer combustion duration. Even the combustion temperature of ammonia is lower than traditional fossil fuel, but the chemistry constitution of ammonia will cause more fuel NOx emission in the exhaust gas. Nevertheless, observations were noted regarding the trade-offs between combustion efficiency and NOx emissions. Overall, the study contributes to the growing understanding of alternative fuel utilization in compression ignition engines, paving the way for more sustainable and cleaner transportation solutions.
