摘要

The present paper gives an overview over the research on internal combustion engines and powertrains carried out in the frame of International Federation for Promotion of Mechanism and Machine Science (IFToMM), more specifically – in its Technical Committee (TC) for Engines and Powertrains [1]. As we know, the “green” emission standards nowadays become the strongest factor affecting engine manufacturers worldwide. As a result, we see a massive drift towards vehicle electrification, especially in the automotive industry. In parallel, however, research and development on much cleaner internal combustion engines continues as well, primarily due to the use of alternative fuels, but also through improved design and control of the combustion process. Besides that, some of the emission and efficiency issues can be successfully solved using hybrid drives. Another alternative solution is the use of turbo generators (gas turbines), used both in transportation and in power generation. For all these increasingly diversified powertrain types it is still crucial to consider dynamics and vibrations, tribology, FEM, CFD, thermodynamics, etc., which affect efficiency, reliability, acoustics and NVH. The advanced technology (including the engineering software) being applied the intelligent way during the design, simulation, testing, and manufacturing of the engines and their components, allows to reach a satisfactory quality with a relatively high performance, thus assuring reasonable costs of the engineering processes. Being formed in 2018, the TC for Engines and Powertrains has been actively involved in research work and dissemination of its results by presentation at scientific events and by preparing publications. Most of the research topics of that kind are presented in the multi-subject book [2]. Recently, together with the other technical committees of IFToMM, a conference on sustainable development was organized [3]. The present paper will give more information on the chapters of the mentioned references, as well as on the other engine-related publications authored by the members of the TC for Engines and Powertrains of IFToMM.
