摘要
The incorporation of ethanol into standard grades of gasoline remains a key strategy for reducing carbon emissions in the light-duty vehicle sector. Moving beyond E10 (with the potential to move to E20 or higher) represents the next phase of the journey towards vehicle decarbonization. Ethanol exhibits distinct low-temperature oxidation chemistry compared to other hydrocarbons in gasoline. Consequently, as ethanol content increases, octane properties display highly non-linear behavior, with a non-linear rise in Research Octane Number (RON) and an increase in octane sensitivity (RON-MON). The paper provides a summary of E20's role within an overarching decarbonization roadmap. Specifically, the presence of 20 vol% ethanol enables the blending of sustainable, low-octane hydrocarbon streams produced from renewable sources (e.g., bio-naphtha) into gasoline, maintaining acceptable overall octane quality. Using a new methodology for creating surrogate gasoline fuels containing ethanol, it is demonstrated that ethanol can indeed facilitate the incorporation of such streams into an overall blend.
